I think religion is a good tool to keep the ignorant masses in line. We just need a new tool, because religion isn't going to last much longer. Even the most ignorant among us are smarter than the originators a few thousand years ago. It's only a matter of time before the whole of humanity will wake up and say...

"Hey, guys, seriously... we can't keep pretending to believe this stuff..."

EDIT - JULIA PLEASE READ THIS

You are completely wrong in your response. And to be quite honest, I'm tired of hearing this. Atheism is not a choice that one makes because we don't want to follow the rules of religion. That is utter nonsense.

WE DO NOT BELIEVE IN YOUR GOD.

The reason we don't believe your god exists is because we have studied your religion, and seen that it is false. It has nothing to do with the decisions we make morally or otherwise.

I can subscribe to your rules if I want to. But I cannot subscribe to it because I believe in a mythological god. That is impossible. I can't make myself insane. And if you acquire the knowledge of religion that someone like myself has acquired... insanity is what one would need to believe it.

You'll find that's the case with most if not all atheists.

In a way, religion keeps people grounded and acting with conviction. In that way, yes we need religion. If there was a better education system in the world, then we would not need religion. But, human nature is still semi-primal right now, therefore at this moment religion is a very good thing. Even though there are certain things that religion restaints the mind from, right now is the transition point, hopefully, where people can start to think more independantly and more civil.

The teachings of the world's major religions don't jive with some people's lifestyles and attitudes. Religion teaches things that these people just don't want to hear. These people would like you to believe that the answer to your question is "no."

These people would like religion to be removed from the world, because its removal would give them a psychological "green light" to engage in whatever behavior they want -- without having to feel at all guilty about it.

Certain societies in history -- most notably communist ones -- have formally removed religion, to the point of legally banning it.

Not coincidentally, these countries have imprisoned, exiled, and killed no less than 200 million of their own people. Just in the past 80 years or so.

In light of this, I think it's obvious what would happen if religion were removed from the world.

The world has a religion or too many of them. There are plenty to go around . Many contradictions.

The world needs God. A relationship with Him. We need a Teacher to get us out of the mess we have put ourselves in.

Yes, well at least some kind if faith, because we have no control over what happens around us, and not much control over our lives, so we need to believe that there's something out there that's in control, and that loves us and has a good plan for all which give us a sense of security because we have a purpose.
BUT I don't think we need most of the religions we have, they are based on guilt and punishment

The world needs true knowledge about the true God. At Matthew 24:45 Jesus told his disciples about a faithful and discreet slave class that he a master would entrustwith special responsibility. He comissioned his members to make disciples and to feed them progressively, giving them their spiritual food at the proper time.
Hebrews 10:25 tells us not to forsake the gathering of ourselves together as some have the custom but encouraging one another and all the more so as you as the day drawing near. These two scriptures indicate that Jesus would appoint men to guide us, so we should not be fearful of that. And worshipers of God should worship together to encourage one another. Yet we should be careful because all guidance is not good guidance. 2 Timothy 4:3,4 says that people will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled.(In other words to hear what they want to hear). and they will turn their ears away from the truth whereas they will be turned aside to false stories.
We are encouraged at 2 Timothy 4:5 to keep our senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, and to fully accomplish our ministry. We should seek the truth about God and his requirements. Instead of running when the bible doesn't conform to the lifestyle we chose, We should run when a religion is too giving to it. We also have to do personal study and reason with the bible instead of taking someone elses word. Proverbs 3:5 Tells us to trust in Jehovah and do not lean upon your own understanding.

Yeah, because without religion there is no hope after life and religion restrains people from hurting society.

The world needs Jesus my friend. And yes, he will be coming soon. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad. I just hope we all get picked up by Him.

Many people who embrace religion so passionately need it, yes, because without belief in the biblical 'God' they might be incapable of self-restraint. They need to believe in the threat of punishment in order to be moral individuals.

Yes. Without religion, we'd be insecure, hopeless, and bad people (what religion tells us to do makes us good people).
