Blacksburg is a city in its own right, but the larger city 40 miles to the north is Roanoke. If you're looking at flying in, your best bets for lower fares are Richmond International Airport (RIC) and Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD), both about five-hour drives from the east and north, although Charleston, WV is two and a half hours away if you can find service there. In addition, Roanoke Regional Airport is served by Allegiant Air, US Airways, United Express, Northwest Airlink and Delta Connection.

If you think of the general sense of a city as a large place of population, then Roanoke is the closest such city. If you think of a city as a continuous area of population, then you have to know that Blacksburg forms a big population area with Christiansburg, and the closest similar area would be Radford.
