Can anyone suggest an inexpensive way of staying in shape? I'm not working at the moment so can't really afford gym membership. I'm going to carry on attending yoga class every week and I go running now and again, but what else can I do that doesn't involve paying for the gym?

Most exercise is free, running, fast walking, hill walking, hiking, step aerobics, (use a brick, they are free) knee bends, pull ups, push ups, crunches, jumping rope ($2) etc.
However I would suggest you also get into resistance training, it will build and tone muscles and keep body fat at a minimum, you can get a 55lb weight set at Wall Mart for $20.
Good luck.

The best at home workout that does not cost anything but energy is bench stepping. I am talking about a bench the height of half your leg length. I am 5'2" and my leg length is 29". My step is 14" high, 10" wide and 24" long. I step for 45 minutes to my favorite music in my workout clothes in front of a mirror. You step up and down alternating legs. You can also do arm work as you're stepping because the arms helps the momentum. You can also do squats and lunges every five mintues to get more out of your workout and then resume stepping until the next five minutes. It is really fun. I have been doing it for ten years. You can see results within two weeks. It lifts your butt, tightens your abs, and strengthens your legs. You will sweat alot but that is good for you because it gets rid of toxin buildup and fat. You might not be able to start out at 45 minutes, which is okay. Just go as long as you can and add minutes each day. I hope this helps.

Start an active hobby such as hill walking or scuba diving. Actually the latter's probably too expensive.

Here's an idea - figure out a way to earn money at the same time, such as starting a dog walking service or offering a home shopping service for the elderly, and walk everywhere they need you to go, then carry the heavy bags back.

Dance , Baby Girl, Dance. If you are not happy enough to dance and like me sometimes feel a declining sense of inclination to dance because you are in a shitty apt. and the air is dirty and you have no mirrors hardly . . .then bike . . Hey . . .I say . . at night. I groan and breathe all hard and go errrrgh, and just express my difficulties while riding and I feel free-er. I am in a town where I don't know anyone . . but even if I knew people . . it would not be so outrageous to be on a bike grr-ing as you try to get it to go. Swimming is good . . but I can't believe how many gyms and such have WARM water . . .wtf? Got to find a COOL pool.

Run 4 days a week. Tone up with the yoga. You're fine!

Also, if you have DirecTV, work out with FiTV

think about the military. They work their personnel cheaply by running, pushups, pullups, and situps. All of these can be done with many deviations and at no financial costs.

Every morning when I awake, I open my eye and go up down, up down 3 times, then I open my other eye and go up down, up down 3 times, it puts me in a good mood all day.

Get yourself a dog...You have to take it for a walk, unless you want a house full of ****.
This way you get your exercise for sure.
