So they don't slip off while sparring. It's not just Tae-Kwon-Do, the belts are tied the same in all martial arts.
Theres really no significance to it.

So they don't come off if you don't want them to. A square knot is used in all martial arts. The square knot also is harder to move, so in grappling arts like Judo and Jiujitsu, your opponent cannot use the belt to choke you.

it is much easier to untie it should you use it in a fight.
