you have to take it out of its case to go thru security.
you have to turn it off during takeoff and landing.
other than that you can use it inflight, but no internet access of course.
and your battery might run out on a flight that long. bring an extra battery.
it is part of your carry-on luggage so that will limit how much you can take. you are allowed two carry-ons of a certain size. the laptop will count as one.

Be ready to take it out of your case through security and put it through the xray machine in one of their bins. Make sure it has enough batteries to turn on if they ask you to do so. Usually they won't. Be sure to shut it off during take-off and landing or you can get fined big-time by an FAA official if there is one on-board. (FYI -- same with a cellphone.) But, if you forget, usually it goes unnoticed, but it's for safety to keep the communication lines clear for the crew and controllers. Also, put the laptop in a case and put it under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment when you're not using it. Don't put it in the seat pocket in front of you because it's not safe. If there is turbulence it can pop up and be thrown around and give someone a big headache to put it mildly. Other than that, enjoy the flight. Hawaii, oh I envy you. Have a great trip!

You can do a carry on but at the security checkpoint be ready to turn it on to prove that it's a working computer and not a bomb or something. Be curteous though! Set it to turn on when you open the cover. This will save time for you and the others in line behind you.

There is no protocol. Just take your laptop. You will be asked to remove it from case and place in a plastic security bin prior to running it through xray machine. That's it!

Listen to some of those people, take it with you, take it out of the case through security, you do NOT have to turn it on, nor should a TSA person ask you to turn it on.
