Maya is a pretty complex concept. The more ascetic Hindu sects state that anything that keeps one from contemplating God is Maya, but Maya is also said to be the power of illusion that keeps those whose minds are not ready from seeing the Divine. Maya is also said to be all that is beautiful and intoxicating, and so in some sects of Hinduism Maya is praised. Like a lot of Hindu religious concepts, Maya is a pretty complex subject and nearly impossible to sum up in one paragraph.
