That's a hard question to answer.
When I went to college for Graphic Design, I had a few instructors tell me that it wasn't for me. That I should try something different. I listened to them and dropped out after a couple semesters. Now, here I am, an Adobe Certified Instructor and have been listed in the top percentage with National Assocaiton of Photoshop Professionals.
Not everyone goes to college for what they are good at. A lot of people go into college looking to get into a glamourous sounding profession.
If you truly desire something, than go for it. Don't let others tell you what you should and shouldn't do. Photography isn't easy. Any schmuck can pick up a camera and take a picture. But a professional can pick up a camera and record a moment in time, whether it's controlled or not.

If you are talking about a class at school and it was the instructor that gave this advice you can do two things :
Listen to him/her and take the course at a later time or from a different instructor or.....
Buckle down and work hard to prove the instructor wrong.
If the advice came from a friend or another student I would talk to the instructor to get a second opinion.

Quit only if you want to, don't let other people decide whether you should quit or not. If you feel you are having success in your course, then don't quit because somebody told you to.

I'd say if it's one of those four course meals and your full put the fork down. J/K
If your not doing so well try a little harder or pick up something else. Photography may not be your thing.

If your instructor suggested you quit, you might want to listen. If a friend or partner suggested you quit (to spend more time with him or her) you should think about it more before deciding.
