My mom died when i was 5 years old. From then on i moved in with my dads family who are African Americans. Every since then I lost all contact with my mother side of the family. Who happens to be Mexicans. Should i consider myself just African American or Mexican or both. Would it be right if I considered myself both?

you're mixed. Rep it!! Be proud that you are from two very rich heritages. And contact your mothers family, you probably will learn alot and begin to love your mexican heritage!

My step-kids asked this as well. (they are white, Afcn Am, hispanic mix, I am white)

as I told them, legally they are African American but they should be not try to be one or the other. They are all of them.

I encourage to read about the history of their ancestory and find out what it was about ..a self learning exercise.

In the end, I tell them that only THEY can define who they truely are and how people will see them...their skin / nationality has nothing to do with it.

But to do that they must know about themselves so when they have a negative "racial" encounter, they will know how to deal with it.

With pride and class, from which only education will give them the tools to do so.

PS - I lost contact with my fathers side and hated them for "losing me"...I searched and found them..they were VERY happy I contacted them..sometimes life gets in the way. Things are good now.

Found out I have a half sister and 14 cousins and 58 nephews and neices!!!! (Celtic Catholic family..lol)

You are an American citizen. But you can call yourself as an American with African and Mexican descent.

You ARE both. No matter who you grew up with, you were still born Mexican AND African American

You are both. You can consider yourself both. You may identify more with one side, but that doesn't change your DNA. I think you are very lucky to have two wonderful cultures that you can explore and relate to. Explore your Mexican heritage. You might gain a better understanding of why you do and think the things you do.

Consider yourself both. You might also consider contacting your Mom's side of the family. There could be health issues you should be aware of.

You should consider yourself human and God's girl. Don't worry about the ethnic make-up of mom's side or dad's side. It's not important. The important thing is that you are loved and that you have family. No matter what they look like, what color skin they have, what color their eyes are, how much they weight, etc. Just be who you are and proud of yourself.

You should consider yourself to be both even though you have not contact with your mother's family.

Sweetie, you have a right to think of yourself any way you please. You can even change your mind every other day! Although, If I might give my opinion, think of yourself as an Amrican first; remember, nearly every single person you meet here is a mixture of this & that (I know *I* am)!
