If I'm quick enough - I usually say it first, because I work in customer service - so I'm used to saying it quite a lot.
At work I always try to thank the customer after they say it, so the last thing they hear me say is "Thank you"

I'm in the US, and I don't know what other people do but I try to say thank you to salespeople first. Why not? They're just trying to do a job like the rest of us.

Here in the States, before, the salesperson said it first.I always did when I worked in stores. Now you're lucky if they even thank you back when you buy something.I was always polite when I was the cashier.I mean, they were buying something from my place of work, supporting my job. When I buy something and say thanks,I usually don't get a word of response back.Their parents did not teach them good manners.Thank you for asking such an interesting question.

It should be a natural response from both parties, because you are buying something from there store, that helps their business and your just polite so you say thank you as well. Overall you should say thank you no matter what.

In America It is customary to say thank you to a clerk only if they've done something for you other than take your money. i.e. advice on a product, help with fitting etc. Other than that they are to say thanks to you every time.

I always say "have a nice day" and smile at them or "thank you" if they say "Thanks" first. After all, they work with the public and that is never easy.

the salesperson says it first they will say "Thanks for shopping at .............. and have a nice day!" then the buyer will say thanks
but sometimes the buyer would say thanks before the salesperson

In the USA the salesperson should say thanks first. They are taking your money and you are paying their salary.
