The quick in my wetie's toe nails is too long for them to be cut. How can I fix/prevent this? His toenails are already so long that they keep breaking, and the vet said she couldn't cut them or it would hurt him. What do I do?

I had the same problem with one of my bulldogs. While he was down for surgery, I had the vet perform a procedure called "quickening." Essentially, they cut the nail short-beyond the quick- and cauterize it to prevent it from growing. Since he was anesthetized already, it was a fairly simple procedure. If you don't keep up with keeping them trimmed, the quick will grow out. But if you do keep up the trimming, you shouldn't have any more problems. It allowed us to maintain his nails at a healthy length. Good luck!

If he will let you do them, just take off a little bit very often (like at least once a week). If you cannot do it, have a groomer or a vet that knows what they're doing cut them as often as you can afford it.

If your dog needs to be anesthetized for some reason, have the vet whack them right back while he's unconscious. Then you can start a regular nail maintenance program while they're still short.

keep triming back to the quick - and don't jus wack them off strait. taper it cutting the top & sides where thew quick isn't down just a tad more than the rest.

First, get a new vet

Second, you can trim just the very tip and eventually the quick will recede - stick with it

Long, long walks on concrete pavements will wear them down naturally. My Westie used to go stark crazy at the sound of a nail clippers. I am afraid, long walks on pavements is the only option.....................
