Are all airfares in China regulated and the same whichever airline you use? Are there any 'low cost' airlines?

This is a great place to get air tickets for China - the prices are competitive and the service is very good.

I just bought tickets through them last month (from their office in San Francisco).

There are many airline companies in China and most of them are competing for passengers. That means, they are fighting for prices as well. Expect discounts from the tickets if you book early. You usually be able to get 10% off even if you purchased the tickets at the airport counter.

Major Airlines are Eastern Airline, China Airline, Southern Airline, Shanghai Airline etc.

There is a budget airline called "ChinQiu Airline" which fly you at a very cheap rate. Unfortunately, they don't operate on the major cities (the taxiing fees are too high for them).

You always get a discount from 10% to 90% off. Check these homepages, they're awesome:

www.elong.com
www.ctrip.com
www.huji.com.hk for Hongkong

If you don't want to buy tickets with your credit card they will deliver it to you in the bigger cities, you just pay cash. Alternatively check the prices and go to a travel agent, every other travel agent can get you the same deal (if they want to)

Have fun

Not quite same. I just came back from China. Sometimes you do be able to get cheaper tickets, depends on what time you want to leave and which ticket angent you use. Some agent even drop your ticket to your home without extra cost.
