There are a number of educational counselor/evaluation docs who specialize in ADD/ADHD for women, children (male/female).

Talk to your parent, as the first post suggests, and begin a search together for a qualified health professional who specializes in ADD/ADHD and learning differences. Call to make appointment for short interview only with your best picks (2-4) and have an "interview." This is a time for the care giver and yourself to decide if you are both comfortable with each other and this time is between you and the caregiver only, not the parent. Ask for just five minutes of time and ask for a reduction in fee for this interview.

Once you select a caregiver, the protocal includes several tests to determine if this is a correct diagnosis for you and if there are learning differences associated. One of the main surveys is self-described symptoms, very subjective. Try NOT to repeat what you've learned about ADD/ADHD, but genuinely what you experience.

Take along every report card you have from pre-K through current grade because the instructor comments are very important to the complete diagnosis.

If diagnosis is or isn't ADD/ADHD, you can always use the self-taught techniques for focusing attention and follow-through, now a major part of the treatment plan and most of these tips are available for free online.

Not everyone will be prescribed medications and as with any brain chemistry blip, medications if prescribed may and probably will need to be adjusted to suit your specific body responses.

And yes, I enjoy the benefits of ADHD and some learning differences. No two human brains process information in quite the same manner.

You could show your mom the results of the tests that you have taken. It may also be helpful to talk to your teachers and school nurse and see if they agree with your findings. They will be able to help you inform your parents of what ADD/ADHD is, diagostic tools, and treatments available. Also be sure to get your parents to set up an appointment with your physician, since ADD/ADHD is a physical condition.

tell your mom to take you the the local mental health agency where you live for a psychiatric evaluation. Telll them you would like to request an appointment for an evaluation and let them know what is going on. They will ask you a series of questions. They will guide you you through the process. ADD/ADHD is not a bad thing. A Mental illlness is a very common illness these days. Many people have this. you are not the first nor will you be the last

Congratulations for taking the first step and admitting this to yourself. Do you have a teacher or counselor at school that could help document this and get the ball rolling? Do you not get along with your mom? If you don't, could the ADD/ADHD be part of the problem between you two? If your mother doesn't want to acknowledge this, can you go through someone she respects--family member, doctor, etc. Good luck to you.

Your mom probably would want to help you. You should tell her you've been having some problems concentrating and that you've done some research and think you have ADD, and you'd like to go to the doctor to be tested.

If she really won't take you, see if there is a counselor or someone at your school who can test you or help in some other way. Even if you are never officially tested and never prescribed any medication, there are other techniques you can use to get yourself organized and focused, and your school counselor may be able to help you with that.

Just simply explain to her that you are having a hard time focusing and concentrating, that you have checked it out, and think you may have ADD/ADHD, and that you would really like it if she took you in for a psych evaluation. You're not crazy, and it's not a bad thing, but you should at least talk to a professional about it....
