Rochester in Kent. You can get there by train from London (London Bridge station), lovely town especially in summer. The towns nearby are worth exploring too. I'd recommend you stay in a Bed&Breakfast accommodation, rent a car and drive around the county.

Rochester is great, the High Street lovely, in the vicinity you have Dickens home...And if you go by car or train, go on to Canterbury...really gorgeous.! Or on to Maidstone and visit Leeds Castle, one of the great castles in the U.K.
