Coasters come with a decorative picture on one side and cork on the other side. If you set your drink on the cork side, the decorative picture is hidden. And it doesn't seem logical to set your drink on the decorative side because the cork would absorb the moisture better. So which is it?

The cork side, my coasters are a wood frame with a recessed circle of cork. The recess is obviously where you place the glass, and if the cork was there to protect the table surface it wouldn't be recessed. Logic wins again!

You put your drink on the decorative side. The cork on the bottom is so that the coaster doesn't slide around... Either way the picture will be covered. Except when there's not a drink on it...

the picture side. the cork is there to benifit the table surface. the picture is for your drink. and by the way, cork is NOT known for its absorbant properties. that's why they use cork and not sponge to stop bottles.

by putting it in on top of the glass with picture facing up, you can prevent things from falling into your drink, and have a pretty picture. I'd be more bummed out if i swallowed a roach than if i got my table wet.
