"It depends", the most famous words in digital photography.

In the case, it depends on what you want to do with your pics.

If the pics are just for short term fun, smaller sizes are fine to view on computer screens and print 4x6's.

If the pics are of significant events (weddings, vacations, etc.) and you want to save the best quality for a long time, use the biggest setting you have. The same is true if you wish to make large prints (8x10 and bigger). Or if you wish to crop out smaller portions of a shot and make enlargements. Or if you wish to show your photos as art.

High resolution photo images give you more flexibility for usage, and more detail for enlargement. But once you give away pixels by using lower resolution, they are gone forever. Sometimes the pics we take today are the treasures of later years.

So decide on a long term plan. Short picture life and no big prints, small size is great. Anything more serious, save the large size.

If you need more space, buy it. Or plan to run the pics off to computer and CD/DVD.

We all face the same problem.

Good Luck

Are you going to take 214 pictures in a single day? If so, then you need to reduce size or buy a bigger card.

If not: Instead of reducing size or buying more memory, just transfer the pics from your camera to you computer more often.

One thing to remember is that you are viewing the billboard from a large distance- if you got right up close, you'd see the image break down a bit. Resolution isn't as vital as you might think at the distance billboards are viewed at- your brain interprets the entire impression; your eyes can't discern the fine details at a distance of 200 feet or whatever.

I usually use 1280x1024. They will look good if I want larger prints and will look even better as normal 4x6in prints.

don't go below 1280x1024 res. Need more space? Get another storage unit.
