what is the square root of a number? Think in exponential numbers; 7 * 7 = 49, therefore the square root of 49 is 7. A negative times itself will be a positive, therefore, -7 * -7 = 49, so the square root of 49 is also -7. To get a negative product, you must multiply a negative by a positive, which are two completely different numbers. Therefore, there cannot be a radical negative. Got it?

technically since when you multiply two negative numbers it becomes a positive, no. But we have other ways about that.
(Imaginary Numbers)
A special number 'i' is equal to the square root of minus 1. Then...
(i2 = -1) To determine the square root of a negative number (-16 for example), take the square root of the absolute value of the number (square root of 16 = 4) and then multiply it by 'i'. So, the square root of -16 is 4i.
As a double check, we can square 4i (4*4 = 16 and i*i =-1), producing -16.
so you see, there are ways about the whole no square root of a negative number thing.....

it's true, but in order to work with negative numbers mathmaticians developed imaginary numbers in which 'i' represents the square root of negative one so that the square root of negative 4 is the square root of 4 times the square root of negative 1, which is 2i. If you think about it, it doesn't take long to realized that no number could ever be multiplied by itself to get a negative number.

Yes, the square root of a number is the opposite of squaring it. For example, -2^2nd power would be a positive 4. You cannot take the square root of a negative because you never get a negitive if you square a number.

It's sort of true. The square of any real number is a positive number. However, for the purpose of solving this very problem, mathematicians have invented something called "the imaginary number" which is equal to the square root of -1.

Depends on if you are talking of real numbers or imaginary numbers. Real numbers, no. Imaginary - yes. Don't EVEN ask me to explain it though., I haven't taken that class in at least 10 years.. lucky I can still add and subtract LOL.
-2 is a real number. So if you are discussing this, then no there are no square roots of negative numbers that are similar to -2.

factor out a -1 and find the square root of the given number, then add to the answer an i (like in italics I think) to it. The square root of a -25 would be 5i (and that does make it an imaginary number)

a square root of a number means that a number was multiplied by itself to reach that number - you cannot multiple and number by itself to reach a negative number therefor it is not possible -
5*5 = 25 square root of 25 = 5
-5 * -5 = 25 the square root of 25 is still 5
when you multiply a negative number you get a positive number therefor there are no negative numbers with a square root
