CAUTION: Always wear safety glasses: Never wear contact lenses, while welding. Maintain good ventilation. Guard from electric shock. Follow all equipment manufactures instructions.

The following instructions, can be used to stick weld (shielded metal arc weld) low carbon steel with a thickness between 3/32" to 3/16".

First you will want to make sure you have the correct shade for your welding helmet. If you use one that is to dark, you won't be able to see what you are doing. If you use one that is to light, the arc will be to intense, and could hurt your eyes: may even cause permanent eye damage. Consult a chart for the proper one. #10 shade should work fine for arc currents between 60 and 160 amps. http://www.caloly-safety.com/info_welding_choosing.cfm

Next, you'll want to select your filler rod (electrode). 6011 should be fine for AC welding on most low carbon steel. The diameter of the rod will depend on the thickness of your base metal. If you are planning to weld 1/8" plate: A 3/32" diameter rod should be just fine. http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/weldrod.html

Next, set your machine to AC mode. Then set your current to between 60 and 160 amps.; preferably starting at the lower value.

Place your filler rod (electrode), in the handle. Connect the other electrode (ground clamp) to the work. With your saftey equipment on, turn the power switch on.

Approach your work, it should be clean and free from rust or oil. Bring the welding rod close to your work, being carefull not to touch your work piece with it yet. Lower your welding helmet over your face. If you have a shade window, on your helmet, close it.

Strike an arc by tapping the electrode to your work. Attempt to maintain the arc by holding the rod just above the work (1/8"). If it will not sustain an arc, increase the amprage in 10 amp increments, and repeat.

Once the arc is sustained, run the rod along the weld groove, in either a circular or whipping motion. This last step will require a lot of practice before one can make a satisfactory welding bead.

You'll need somebody to show you in person. An online text message board format is no place to learn how, especially given the possible dangers involved.

You might try a Google search on:

gas Welding – What that's? Welding is a technique which is composed of combining of two supplies at the same time. often performed in circumstances of metals, welding is performed by way of warmth to soften the molten ends and connect them at the same time by way of including fillers to the molten section. gas welding because of the fact the call shows makes use of extremely some form of gases and oxygen to ignite a torch. additionally standard as oxy-gas welding, the main elementary gases used in this technique are Propane, MAPP gas, organic gas, acetylene, liquefied petroleum and so on. anyhow the main elementary gas used in this technique is acetylene. This technique grow to be progressed in 1903 and is right this moment utilized in welding of pipes, tubes and is likewise utilized in repairing metals. whilst it is composed of variety of metals which could be joined employing this methodology – surprisingly much each and all of the metals could be welded employing gases. the sole element to bear in mind is that no longer each and all of the metals soften on an identical temperature and hence one needs to maintain this element in concepts whilst resorting for the welding technique. Fuels used: As reported till now, acetylene is the main in many situations used gas in gas welding. different standard fuels are butane, propylene, gas and hydrogen. those fuels are often blended with oxygen to sell warmth and soften the metals. whilst oxygen is blended with the gas the approach is standard as oxidation and is populary referred as combustion. One needs to continuously bear in mind that each and each gas has an unique components of its own. hence one gas can't be utilized in each and all of the needs as its warmth residences are different whilst in comparison with the others. subsequently one needs to take factors basically like this sort of steel as properly because of the fact the residences of the gas to be certain if an marvelous weld could be created. kit used: a typical welding kit makes use of the two oxygen as properly as gas gas to start the approach. Powered with 2 hoses and a pair of rigidity regulators for each source, the welding appartus works with the torch to weld the supplies. In circumstances the place portability is a controversy, the torches are made with pressurized liquid fuels so as that the burden on the kit could be delivered down. A regulator is extensively utilized to administration the rigidity from the hoses of the tanks. The consumer subsequently controls the flow of fuels with the regulator in the two the hose as properly as interior the cylinder.
