I'm with you. A typo here and there is one thing, the lazy lack of literacy is appalling. One of the girls in our office said she "shorthands" things because she texts all the time, but when push came to shove, she couldn't compose a basic letter. Had to kick her to the curb.
Most people here say it's all casual and it's not serious, but when all people have to go on is how you write your comments, do they really like looking like morons for the whole world to see?

EYE, lol. I think it's our society's fault on that one. People tend to rush through things without proof reading or using spell check. Spell check doesn't always work too I've noticed that on some papers I had to write this past semester. The best thing to do is proof read your work and look through a dictionary, that way you know the correct spelling for certain.

Yeah, my theory is that people are getting lazier and lazier-- not about correcting their ability to communicate, but about establishing their identities.
The little toys online think that that typing in short form with symbols is really an extension of who they are as a human being, as if it reflects their personality, their potential, thier identity. It's too hard to maintain integrity through actions and accomplishments, right? Or to sit down and really connect with someone, face to face. Why go through all the trouble if I can just dye my hair, or get a tattoo, or type like a preschooler?
I mean that REALLY broadcasts who I am, right?
Pffffffffffffft... Toys, yo-- I'm with you.

euhm, on the internet it's ok to use spell checker, but people sometimes feel confident they spell things correctly and therefore do not use spell check.
For some people it's just too slow or for others to much work.
In Word it's easy to use but sometimes not always correct because you can type "met" or "meat" and both words will show as correct while you ment to type "met".
Maybe live spell checking on the internet is the answer? :p
Count my errors! ;)

The thing is that spell check only works if you have a word completely misspelled. If you just spell a word like another word, it doesn't notice.
So I can write: I no this is rung butt spell Czech want no it even thou eye wood like it two.

If they cannot spell, why would they know how to read?
If they cannot read, why do you think they know what "check spelling" means?
If they don't know what "check spelling" means, why would you think they would use it even if it's free and readily available?
This is like the "chicken or the egg" question, what a headache! Lil..

Pure and simple laziness. Most don't care about how unintelligent they sound when they speak so why should they care if they look stupid when they write. This isn't even improper grammar we are talking about it is right in front of them. like you say.

I think that people get so excited to get an answer out there or a question out there, that it never crosses their mind to click on "check spelling."
