allright. well there seems to be some confusion with this question. I DO NOT HAVE A SON. If I did I wouldn't make him build an outhouse. Jeez. My friends and I always post stupid questions to see what people say. allright? so you fell for it. go on, feel bad.

I think that maybe this 11 year old is super awesome and he should be allowed to build whatever his heart desires. I think building outhouses builds character especially in Japan.

NO, I wouldn'y let my 11 YO build an outhouse. I am sure an 11 YO does not have the resources to understand the implications of having an outhouse somewhere (you know, sewage in the water table, that sort of fun stuff) on top of having the proper training to use tools to build this sort of thing.

Sounds like there is something else going on here, and I have no idea what it is.

It isn't child abuse, it's just stupid. Unless one is living out in the country. And there needs to be a special building permit, and the outhouse needs to meet certain specifications, and then inspected by city officials.

Who's he abusing? Himself??? Child abuse refers to misconduct done TO a child, not something the child is doing, unless such activity is dangerous (i.e., climbing on the roof & jumping off, etc), and even then it would considered "child endangerment" not abuse.

If the kid WANTS to dig the whole, build the hut around it and sh!t in the ground, let him do it (providing there are no city ordinences forbidding it). It's probably a phase, a curiosity and he will outgrow it quickly enough.

If however, the parent is MAKING the child do it for punishment of some sort (bedwetting, for example), there's a problem that needs to be addressed ASAP.

Is he building it from scratch, unaided? That sounds like a lot of work if he is. What size is it? Does he want to build it?

My son is 10 1/2 and very resourceful and he would love a project where he could build something. He is mature for his age, responsible and capable but even so, I'd insist on help/supervision on the more dangerous parts.

I guess it depends on the level of supervision, safety of the child and protection given in the case.

I don't think it's child abuse if he wants to build it or help build it. I would never make a child build something without help. I wouldn't let him build an outhouse, if it was his idea as a cool new way to use the toilet (you'd end up cleaning it up). I would let him if he thought it would be a cool decorative addition to the backyard (more power to creativity).

Why does he want to build an outhouse. If he really needs something to do have him build something more useful, like a sandbox for a younger sibling or something along the lines of that. Why is it child abuse?

Dont know about an outhouse, but you better not have a child yet, if you get your jollies off wasting peoples time for your amusment you lack the patience and maturity to devote to a kid, that at least is for sure.

Outhouse? Something tells me anyone who needs an outhouse isn't familiar with the term "child abuse."

well i would let him try, because he will learn a lot, like that it is very difficult and he probably can't afford to buy the materials and doesn't have a truck to haul them home from the lumber store, and doesn't have a hammer, etc etc. I think allowing him to try if he wants to has no harm. It would be a very rare 11-yr-old who could do it. How is it child abuse?
