From one source (in Egypt), I was told that the penalty was public whipping, 100 lashes for men and 80 lashes for women. From another source (a well-learned person), I was told that it's only whipping and it's done with a palm frond, and it's only for humiliation, not infliction of pain or physical injury. Is this correct?

Only need reply please. Stoning is not the penalty for adultery in Islam, not even for women.

Please, no anti-Muslim pot shots, I am asking a serious question of MUSLIMS ONLY. I want to know the OFFICIAL Islamic answer to this question, not just the traditional one. I realize many countries stray from pure Sharia law, but I want to know the letter of the law... what is the penalty? And since there are several forms depending on the circumstances, please explain.
Again, and I stress, NO POT SHOTS, THIS IS FOR LEARNED MUSLIMS ONLY.

There are different types of adultery. A man that is not married but adulterates with a married woman then the man gets whipped(I am not sure of the amount, but it will differ whether he was aware or not, previous cases, etc.) and the woman will either be stoned or killed or some other method; I've heard of throwing down a cliff. The same is true the other way around also if the man is married and he adulterates with a single woman. If they are both married, then both will face death. If they are both single, then both will be faced with whipping. Different countries in the Middle East have different laws, not all according to Islam. It is the same with Judaism and Christianity, although it is not concentrated on as most are giving up their religion practice due to people's opinions over God's law. And there has to be a almost impossible amount of witnesses to accuse any one of adultery. Also if there are witnesses but not enough or it is proved that nothing happened, then those 'false' witness will face the same punishment as those who were being accused of adultery. So basically, it never happens or else I'm sure it would have been on the Jewish dominated medias all over the world. It is a deterrent to protect society from corruption which is plaguing the West now, specially Hollywood. Usually people who are against it are the ones that commit it.

Thanks For Your Question :)
Well Applying the penalty (whipping 100 lashes) has many rules
Before whipping :
1. There must be 4 witnesses that saw the adultery happening
2. No need for witnesses if he confessed that he committed the adultery
3. Whipping must not be on certain part of his body only but it must be spread on all the parts as not to injure him several
4. Do not hit in the head or the private parts
5. The hitter must not raise his hand more than 90 degrees as not for the lash to be so strong
6. No Binding or tying
7. The Adulterer could were some clothes but not to thick
8. The whip must not be too new to cut into his flesh or too old as not to feel it at all
The 100 lashes is not to kill but to discipline only
While the symbolic whipping is just when the wife doesnt obey her husband he should first tell her then if she continued disobeying he should leave the bed then if she continued disobeying her he should hit her on the palm which is symbolic as you said :)
I hope this helped you to understand more :)

OK i guess i am the best person over here to answer your question ACCURATELY and most importantly CORRECTLY!!
Adultery is prohibited in Islam. The person who commits it must be stonned to death......but but but the prosecution will only be made if they have 4 male eye-witnesses which makes it quite IMPOSSIBLE to impose the penalty.
In the first 300 years of Islam there were no cases of Adultery.
Nowadays, Stoning to death is not found anywhere... maybe 1/year or even less than that... because 4 male eye-witness thing makes it hard...
So the new rules include that if UN-MARRIED guy RAPES a girl and medical tests prove that then he will be beaten on his back 80 times with a hunter.
but these punishments are very rare as there are no rape cases in Islamic Countries...!! (thats other thing if girl and guy both commits adultery intentionally, no penalties will be imposed)

I am afraid you have no good background of Islam. You are looking for what you call "learned Muslims", then you should have at least some background about Islam to argue them.
Stoning is the punishment for adultery in Islam, and it is applied only for married people (both men and women). This is based on what prophet Muhammed used to do. It is applied in Iran, Saudi and Pakistan who all fully implement Islamic Sharia. However, there is some debate about stoning because it was not mentioned in Quran, but Muslims argue that although it was not mentioned in Quran it still should be applied because prophet Muhamemd used to do it.

The Islamic sharia regulation is an same because the biblical regulation -penalty for adultery and sex out of marriage- they must be stoned 2 lack of existence. I u christians were 2 persist with this regulation in accordance 2 the bible then i'm afraid ninety% of all young ones and adults ought to have 2 be killed. As adultery and sex out of marriage is rampant among the western subculture(your subculture). Muslims do no longer worry this regulation as we've our morals and modesty in position.

Stonning is for a rappist.
100 whips in the public sounds correct. For the man and woman the punishment is same.
The Islam wants people to get married as soon they enter their maturity and there is a saying from Prophet that (not the exact words, I am quoting from my memory) "When one gets married, he/she has comepleted half of his/her faith."

Imaam an-Nawawee rahimahullaah wrote in "The legal punishments".
FORNICATION
This consists of introducing the male organ into the vagina of a forbidden woman, without any ambiguity or doubt, or into the anus of a man or woman as well, according to out school, and it receives a prescribed penalty (hadd), regardless of whether it was done for payment or by consent, and is applied as well for (relations with) a woman within the forbidden degrees of kinship or marriage (e.g. sister of a living wife) even if a marriage was performed. The guilty person must be adult, sane, and aware that it is wrong. Drunkenness is no excuse.
1. The hadd of an adult free Muslim or member of a protected community, who has consummated a legal marriage before this, is stoning to death. If one of the two partners has not, it does not lessen the guilt of the other
2. The hadd of a fornicator who is not adult and free or was never married is one hundred lashes and banishment for a year, and if the Imam designates a place of banishment, that must be accepted.
3. For a slave the hadd is fifty lashes and banishment for half a year.
The permanant committee said concerning repentance from Adultery,
There is no doubt that illegal sexual intercourse is one of the major sins. Among the things that lead to this sin is women being unveiled, free mixing of men with unrelated women (i.e. women for whom they are not Mahrams), the decay of morality, and the corruption of society in general. So if you committed adultery as a result of being far away from your wife and mixing with evil and corrupt people, then you regretted your sin and repented to Allaah with a sincere repentance, we hope that Allaah will accept your repentance and forgive you your sin, in accordance with the words of Him, Most High:
"And those who invoke not any other ilaah(god) along with Allaah, nor kill such person as Allaah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor committing illegal sexual intercourse - and whoever does this shall receive the punishment. The torment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism), and do righteous deeds; for those, Allaah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Al-Furqaan 25:68-70]
It has been confirmed from Ubadah bin as-Samit, may Allaah be pleased with him, in the Hadeeth of the women's oath of allegiance, that the Prophet (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said:
فمن وفي منكم فأجره على الله ومن أصاب من ذلك شيئا فعوقب فهو كفارة له ومن أصاب منها شيئا من ذلك فستره الله فهو إلى الله إن شاء عذبه وإن شاء غفر له
"And whoever from among you fulfils it, their reward is with Allaah. And whoever commits any such thing is punished for it, and that will be atonement for if. And if anyone commits anything and Allaah conceals (the sin), then the matter rests with Allaah. He may forgive them if He wills, and he may punish them if He wills." (Al-Bukhari no.4894 and Muslim no.1709)
But you must migrate from that corrupt environment since it encourages you to commit acts of disobedience, and you seek your living in another country where the evil is less than it, in order to preserve your religion. For verily, Allaah's earth is spacious, and a man will not be deprived of a land in which he may earn the sustenance which Allaah has written for him:
وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُمَخْرَجًا {2} وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ
"And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will wake a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide for him from (sources) he never could imagine." [At-Talaq 65:2-3]
And may the peace and blessings be upon our Prophet, Muhammad (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) and upon his family and companions.
The following are hadeeth from the Chapter on prescribed punishments,
'Ubada b. as-Samit reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Receive (teaching) from me, receive (teaching) from me. Allah has ordained a way for those (women). When an unmarried male commits adultery with an unmarried female (they should receive) one hundred lashes and banishment for one year. And in case of married male committing adultery with a married female, they shall receive one hundred lashes and be stoned to death.
