I'm sure there were members of the media who figured it out, even with the tight security lid on it.

Back then, however, the media realized how much damage could be done to "our" war effort by disclosing sensitive information. They were on "our" side.

The difference now is that the American media today don't consider themselves as Americans first and journalists second. They, like a few CNN reporters during the first Gulf War who refused to be de-briefed by our military, consider themselves journalists first and only.

The media today has no self-restraint. They would not sit on a story no matter how many lives were in the balance ... it could cost them a "scoop" or a Pulitzer!

Yes, but back then the press actually believed that it would harm the country and war effort, so they honored the press blackout until a couple of days after.

They knew it was generally coming but the soliders themselves didn't find out until 1 or 2 days beforehand that they were actually invading.

No.

An incredibly tight lid was kept on the invasion beforehand.

I'm not sure a military action of that scope could ever be kept that secret again.
