It means once your eyes have been opened to the truth.

For example, if you have a curtain over a window and you don't look beyond it, all you know is that the curtain is there and don't know for sure if anything is behind it. But if you look behind the curtain, then you know the truth of what is really there.

Also, think of the scene in the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy and friends finally get in to see the wizard. They see this frightening mask and fire and smoke that is supposed to be the Wizard, but when they look behind the curtain, the truth of it is that the "Wizard" is just a small, old man.

I guess it means that you see the truth about something or someone. To me, it's almost like "don't judge a book by it's cover" because maybe its not always something that you'd expect.

to find out that something is not as special or amazing as you thought it was. Rather it was an illusion.
