Well I know for the wedding tradition, symbolically the first task that bride and groom perform jointly as husband and wife. The first piece of cake is cut by the bride with the "help" of the groom.

I don't know how the tradition started on the other events ... but I always get nervous for some reason cutting the cake. OH THE PRESSURE!

Cause its there cake....what if you had a wedding and you let your cousins aunt's brothers cousin cut the cake....don't you want to smash the cake into your husbands/wife's face? if it is for a birthday I don't think the person honored has to cut the cake per say but they should get the first piece that's how I do it.

Because the cake is part of their gift of the party, so they get to take the first slice. What I can't stand is when the honoring is left serving everyone! After the cake is cut and the first piece given to the honoree, the hosts should take over.

It's just tradition. It's because the person being honored "gets the honor" of cutting the cake first.

Also because it is their cake since the cake is a celebration of them, so they are 'entitled' to the first piece.

I think we should let the person being honored sit there and Eat the first piece of cake!

It's their cake and they can judge the order in which the cake is given and how much is given to each person.

Who else?

And how would you pick the designated cake cutter without starting a fight if it were someone else?
