Your best option is to buy a non-amplified antenna and a separate antenna booster. A rather small antenna (approx 66" boom) with a VHF/UHF/FM booster is a perfect solution. The smaller antenna is not an eye sore on your house and the results are as good as if you bought a larger antenna. Channel Master, Winegard and Radio Shack all have good ones in the price range of around $65. The antenna you need will be about $40. So you'll have a nice set-up for around a hundred bucks.

Amplified antennas have a small amplifier mounted at the antenna terminals. These are useful if you have a long run of cable from the antenna to the receiver. They are generally not helpful if the signal reaching the antenna is weak, since the amplifier amplifies the noise along with the signal. If you are in a strong signal area, you should not use an amplified antenna, since it is possible to overload the input of the receiver with too strong a signal.
