It's an unspoken law to tip 5%-15% of the cost of your meal-In my case my hair.I had it set once at a dept. store when I was a teen, and I didn't know to leave a tip-no one told me.I was ignorant. But it's the same as at the restaurant.I felt like such an a*s,for not knowing, but they ought to put up a sign mentioning it.But my hair looked superb and I became stuck on PaulMitchellHawaiianGinger Shampoo.

Only once... and I've experienced all kinds of bad service but the ultimate in bad service was when the waitress FINALLY gave us the bill after the worst service ever and said that she added the 18% gratuity for a large group (there were only 5 of us) because she knows we weren't going to tip because she "totally ignored" us.
So I paid in cash, to the penny, excluding the tip, and handed it directly to the manager. And this wasn't a theme restaurant with curbside pick up, this was a real restaurant. The waitress just didn't want to wait on us.
(By the way, i usually tip 20% for OK service, 25% or better for better service, so it not that I'm cheap... she just had a lot of stones adding the tip in knowing she was wrong.)

I have to me it's all about service am a good tipped if treated right but have had for example food that was not the way I ordered and the waitress argued with me. I finally got what I ordered after talking to the manager but she lost her tip. I do tip at sonic for example not a lot but some.

Be aware they're probably working for minimum wage, and tips is how they survive. A little extra change from you isn't a big deal, but it adds up for them.
I've only not tipped when the service has been terrible and/or the server has been rude. Even then, I leave them a note explaining why.

I have left a penny for each person at the table. I was really embarrassed about doing it, but the service was absolutely the worst that it could have been.

Yes mostly because I was broke after I got my food. I felt bad because they depend on good tips (they obviously don't get paid that much). P.S. They don't really ever "expect" tips.
