I want to jump rope vs. running...do you think i'll get the same benefits???

Yes, it's just as good as running as far as a form of cardio. Great for the heart!

Since different people have different training zones and I do not have enough information about you to show you how to determine yours. I would suggest you talk to a professional trainer at one of the local gyms in your area. Cardio should be maintained no less than 30 minute intervals for a minimum of 3 times a week. You can substitute jumping rope as it is great cardio. Just do it on a surface like a wooden aerobics floor or carpet. Harder surfaces like concrete and asphalt may lead to shin splints and stress fractures of the bones in your lower leg. If you feel sharp pains there, ease up on the impact exercises like this for a while.
