Most of the time, it's because the system doesn't register that they have signed off. You send them an IM and the system tries to send it to them, and then it realizes that it can't be delivered because they're really offline. So it updates in your list only after you've sent it and been "ignored". Don't take computer glitches personally.
The other thing could be that when that computer is on, the IM automatically signs in your friend, and somebody else is using the computer. They hear the IM, and then sign out because it's not their IM account.

IM is not a perfect technology. If they shut down their Internet connect or the connection drops, the on-line indicator will not be updated to off-line. They may actually be off line. They could also be away from the computer at the time. If they do not respond, it could mean anything, from nothing at all to go away...

Probably not. They might not even be by the computar. Maybe another family member is and the other person is sick of people popping up so they sign the person youre trying to talk to off

They could be busy, away from the computer, at work...there are so many explanations. If you are constantly IM-ing you might be annoying them so just message once, if they dont respond try calling or email them.

They might not want to talk to you because they are in the middle of a conversation with another person. Or they just do not want to talk to you at the moment.

They may be busy, they may not be there, they may not care what you think, they may not be bothered by what you think of their actions, etc.
In summary, just don't worry about it.

Well, either they don't want to talk to you or they're not getting your messages.
