For my wedding, I had used silver and baby pink as the colors. The meaning I gave people about using silver was that it could withstand anything it faced but also could soften everything. It was minimal yet a powerful part of life in terms of everyday life.

The often heard expression "something old something new" stems from the Victorian era and is usually missing the last line.
Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
The meaning of these things was to give the bride luck and stability. Something old conncted her to her past, something new gave hope for her future, something borrowed (usually from a married relation) gave her some luck from a currently married woman, and something blue was either in homage to Mary or a nod to Roman tradition where the bride wore blue. The silver sixpence was for a prosperous future.
So instead of making her feet sore, you are using the silver to spread the luck and joy of the marriage's future prosperity.

Silver is brilliant -- it shines as brightly as will your daughter and son-in-law's love for each other. Congratulations!
