I start of with £500, now to take away 18% would be £410.
Now ignore the £500 pound, you know nothing about that, how would i get back to the £500 by just knowing the £410 and 18%.

multiply 500 by .82 to get to 410 then you would do the inverse or divide 410 by .82 to get to 500

This is an algebra problem. You know that you took 18% away from something to get 410, so you can write the following

x - .18*x = 410

(1-.18)*x = 410

.82 *x = 410

You solve for x and get

x = 410 / .82 = 500

Tada!

Divide 410 by 0.82 (100% - the 18% you know) and you get the 500

You have to look at it like this. 100% is what you wish to determine subtract 18% and you come up with 82%.
410 is 82% of an amount. how to get that amount is trial and error.
if you were to start with 550 for instance 82% of 550 is 451 so we know 550 is to high. If you were to try 82% of 475 you would get 389.5 and you just narrow it down till you get the winning combination!

500-500*.18 = 410
So,
500*(1-.18) = 410
So
410 / (1-.18) = 500
