you need to use something that is sterile and has antibiotics in it to prevent infection. vaseline is not sterile and traps heat as well as germs inside the wound which can cause serious infection.

use telfa pads instead of gauze-the gauze will absorb the ointment that is needed for the wound to heal and will stick to the wound itself. telfa pads can be found in the first aid section of any local drug store or grocery store (brand curad has them-look for the word telfa on the front of the box).

apply thin layer of neosporin or bacitracin ointment to the wound after washing it well with warm water and soap. apply telfa pad directly over wound-the pads should already have tabs on them so additional tape is not necessary. change these as often as needed and keep them dry at all times.

report to the emergency room if you notice:
-the wound is getting larger is size or is developing a hole to it-becoming deeper
-the drainage increases
-the drainage becomes brownish-yellow or green in color
-the wound or any drainage coming from it has a foul odor
-you have red lines extending from the wound to the rest of the body-this indicates infection has gotten into your bloodstream
-you suddenly develop a fever

all of the above are symptoms of infection and oral or iv antibiotics is needed immediately.

NO..get some pads called Tel fa which have a plastic coating on them so that they are in contact with the wound..then when you redress your wound it won't stick..Vaseline can keep the wound from draining since its water protective..and it will seal the wound so to speak..go to our local drugstore in the band aide section and look around for gauze pads and you will find the tel fa pads..

sounds like you are infected go see your doctor. there are special tapes in the drug store that will hold the bandage down and keep the oozing in place. don't use Vaseline.

I wouldnt use vaseline because it suffocates the wound, and wounds should get air to help them heal. I would use a Bacetracine or Neosporin, or some sort of first aid ointment.
