It's a training tool similat to a halter worn by horses. It uses the philosophies of natural psychology. It applies pressure to the bridge of the nose, and the back of the neck. Both are points where a mother or more dominant dog would apply pressure to control an unruly dog. There's no jerking, and eventually, no pulling. There is a period in the beginning where all he's thinking is "get it off!", but firmly lifting his head with your hand (NOT the leash) will help him get over it. The fit is very important, so make sure you talk to your vet/trainer, not some kid at the pet store, about how to adjust it.

As said before, the Gentle leader is a better brand, with the same idea. It is much more adjustable, and doesn't slip off easily, like the halti. I walk all 3 of my german shepherds (50, 70, and 95 pounds) in one hand with the gentle leaders. Not one walks terribly well without it.

Drop me an e-mail (castawaycp@yahoo.com), if you like. I'd be happy to share tips on using it, and at least explain how to properly fit it to your dog.

It is a headcollar that fits over the dogs head and nose. People think that they are muzzles but they are not- they do not restrict the movement of the dogs mouth or head at all. They change the point where the lead is attached from the dogs neck to his head. This makes perfect sense! What other domestic animal do we try and control with a rope around his neck? Horses and other working animals have always had headcollars, so why not dogs? The headcollar makes the dog much easier to control. If they pull against a Halti, they are simply pulling their own heads to one side. They soon learn that it is pointless. They have no choice but to go where their head is pointing! Also, they cannot throw all their weight behind a halti to pull forward, so you are in command. If the dog pulls with a standard collar, he can strain against it until he is choking himself. Not so with a Halti. I fully recommend them. Puppies get used to them really quickly, but older dogs need a bit of climatisation before they are really effective. Actually, I prefer a similiar product called the 'gentle leader' over the Halti. It is a slightly different fit, and makes use of a calming point on the back of the dogs head where a more dominant dog might apply pressure.

Halti's are a miracle. They were a breakthrough in our training, and while he does not wear them now, they let us go from the worst in class to one of the best. (We used it in class for about a month and went back to a flat collar, but they helped focus...) We continued on with more advanced classes without it for several months, but it helped us at first. I still like to use it when we are in VERY crowded places, it gives me an added sense of control...

My puppy trainer said that with a Halti an old lady in heals can walk a great dane while drinking coffee! And I agree, when ever the dog starts to pull in front, even a little, it's head turns and it will slow or stop.

An untrained dog will typically walk nicely it's first day on a Halti. Although I actually really prefer it's competitior the "Gentle Leader." Same principle, slightly diffrent design, which worked better for my hyper puppy.

He will try to paw it off it's face at first....

Its a type of lead that helps with Stopping them pulling & Calms boisterous behaviour.

Walking a Large powerful dog or one that pull on the lead to the point of choking themselves is really helped by this invention. Dogs of all sizes can pull on the lead so they come in all sizes from really small to really big..

Its revolutionary design Naturally follows the contours of a dogs face and positioned well down the dog’s nose, the Halti gives you maximum steering power and control. The particular advantage of the Halti is its unique on-off muzzle-closing effect: when the dog attempts to lunge forward or attack, his jaws are closed by the slip ring. When he is relaxed or friendly, he can pant easily and act just like a dog. The soft material and careful design and construction ensures the Halti is comfortable and in many dogs can create a pronounced calming effect.

Hope this helps.. Michelle from England.

A halti is the greatest thing in the world and it works better that a painful choke or prong collar that doesnt really do anything but crush the windpipe of your dog. The answers above explain exactly what it is but I just wanted to retort to the people who have slandered its use on here....The one person said dogs break thier necks using it but that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard...the only possible way your dog could break his neck with it is if you let him run to the end of a 20 foot lead and then jerked back on it as hard as you can, when used according to instructions a halti is safe and humane method that actuall prevents the dog from being able to pull at all. Choke chains and prong collars put pressure on a dogs trachea and spine and as every real dog owner knows that is quite cruel not to mention inneffective, a dog with one of those on can keep pulling all they want until they pass out unless you teach them not to by jerking viciously on the collar and purposely choking the dog repeatedly until he is scared to pul because of the PAIN. A halti causes no pain and doesnt squeeze the airways shut at all it merely gives you complete control over the dogs head which makes it impossible for them to pull because when they do you turn thier head away and redirect thier line of vision and they cant pull if thier head is facing in another direction. It is like a horse halter so imagine if you tried to use a choke chain on a horse to steer it or prevent it from pulling, stupid right??? While you can clearly see how well a halter works to steer and direct a horse it is the same with using a halti on a dog. It isnt for lazy people to use instead of training dogs it is for people with common sense and compassion who would rather use intelligent design to help control thier dog instead of pain and choking.

It is a kind of head collar with a band that goes over the dogs nose, which pulls tight if the dog pulls. It is a BRILLIANT tool to use if your dog tends to pull on a normal lead, because unlike a normal collar and lead, pulling on a halti only makes life uncomfortable for the dog. He'll soon stop pulling!
I highly recommend it!
It is NOT cruel by the way!

Many dogs have hurt or broken their necks when using haltis/gentle leaders. I advise my classes against them, they are not gentle at all.

I hate them and so do many dogs. They are just an excuse not to train your dogs.

It's like a bridle but without the bit. The more the dog pulls forward it's head is pulled round to the side and like a bridle the dog has to follow it's head or stop pulling.

that is a coaching device, and entirely humane see you later because that's used authentic. make efficient you many times have administration of the lead. in the adventure that your dogs begins to run off, it ought to fairly harm his neck even as the lead tightens unexpectedly. They do look like muzzles to the uneducated individual. that's unlucky for the dogs who's wearing it =( yet when that's operating for then you definately keep at it. attempt educating those human beings, in case you care to. If no longer, purely ignore about them. similar element with prong collars. they look extremely evil -- human beings assume that a dogs with a prong collar is "propose" or "out of control." in truth, they're extra humane (and extra effective) than choke collars, because the dogs feels the stress without almost strangling itself. upload: contained in the incorrect fingers, ANY training device ought to correctly be inhumane -- haltis, prong collars, choke collars, crates.... there's a acceptable and a incorrect thanks to apply them. many times those those who trust those issues to be "undesirable" in ordinary words have heard about the detrimental results of misuse.
