maybe because it's green, and a lot of people tend to over cook it, I like is it at home, but not when it's in the schools cantine. It's a good question, for brussel sprouts I can totally understand why kids don't like it.

Some parents don't introduce vegetables to their kids in a proper way. My daughter is three and she loves her vegetables (even more so than her meet). When ever she eats broccoli she refers it as eating a "tree" and she chomps on it; raw, steamed, or cooked, it doesn't matter. Also you have to be aware of the influences other kids may have on them too...my daughter loves spinach but one time her aunt walked by and seen her eating it and told her spinach was yucky. She stopped eating until I told her that spinach was not yucky, it was very good for her and made her very strong, she gobbled it right up. I think it depends on the preparation of the vegetable too; you would hope that it would taste delicious and not too overcooked.

my son is 7 and has loved broccoli all of his life...
i can only think of a couple foods he doesn't like, and he is a big veggie lover...i think it's purely an individual thing, but...
we never made "good" or "bad" tasting foods an issue. we let him taste things that we liked, and he enjoyed whatever food we were eating with us. by eating the same things his parents ate, he got to enjoy the social aspects of eating.
we also let him choose which foods he got seconds of, since we served small portions of everything. this way he could try all of the foods on the plate and eat the most of what he liked the most.
this also allowed him to trust our judgment about what he was willing to try and did not give him the preconception that we were trying to trick him into eating any "yucky" food. most kids make up their mind if they like something before they try it based on the parents hypersensitive actions. we avoided all of this by being consistent and trustworthy.
maybe some of this contributed, or maybe he was just bound to like vegetables.

I blame the parents 100%. If the kids aren't raised to eat vegetables, what makes them think they are just going to magically like them when they're 6 or 7 years old?

my kids love broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts, okra, green beans...
See I have a system.... I will make three things for dinner (meat, starch, veggie).................. they have to eat two out of the three or they cannot leave the table... so I trick them sometimes and make them a meat or noddles, I know they really dont care about.. then they have to try the new veggie.
Sometimes I think it is the introduction of new things.. I spoke with a child dietary nutritionist.... and she told me that if you continually introduce something to a child.. they will eventually try whatever it is.

My kids love it too. We introduced them to it at a young age. We called them baby trees. They loved the idea of eating trees like giants. My niece on the other hand will induce vomiting if it even touched her food. Strange huh? I think its all in the way you are raised.

Scientists have found that there is a chemical reason for it. Some people's taste buds are oversensitive to the chemicals in veggies, so they taste bitter to them. You just have to find a way to mix them into other dishes inconspicuously.

Aw, come on. I eat broccoli as well but it doesn't really taste like anything. It has a texture. But unless you cook it with butter or use spices, it is pretty bland. I like the flower part myself. I think kids view it as too much like eating grass or other plants they see growing wild.
