I am currently training my dog to retrieve ducks. It is hard because I dont hunt ducks and we are in the middle of a drought and there is not a lot of water here. I am doing it because my dog loves it and looks forward to his training sessions and because my brother wants to take him duck hunting. My lab is 10 weeks old. I bought a cap gun(not a toy one, it shoots blanks) from a sporting goods store and practice with that. Do not shoot too close to your puppy, you will scare the crap out of him and all he will do is hide. dont even use the gun at first. Labs will naturally retrieve its just the bringing back part they have to learn. Be consistant, dont even let him get away with running off one time, because he will do it from then on. Start with the basics, sit, stay, heel, laydown, all that. When that is mastered, start on the retrieving part. When your pup has brought you back the dummy numerous times, wait untill he goes out to get it before you fire the gun. Get him used to it. Buy a book on this subject, thats what I did, it tells you how to train them for this. Good luck!!

Coaching can and must start as soon as you get the dog. Use reward-founded, variety coaching, and your canine will be trained fortunately and rapidly. The recommendation to wait until a later age comes from a number of sources, customarily folks who are pondering of superseded patterns of training which can be founded on physical punishment or humans who're thinking of coaching for distinct skills like these wanted for searching or different "dog jobs." And, some vets used to suggest retaining a pup far from others unless all the vaccinations are completed. That led to their advising no longer going to a category of some sort until the dog was older. Many now feel that more dogs come to be loss of life when you consider that they're unsocialized and out-of-manipulate due to lack of training than will die of parvo or different ailments, so it is worth getting a canine out and about, inside limits. Finally, which you can without doubt do in-residence coaching opening immediately.

Start him at about 10 - 12 weeks with the basics. Also- get the book "Water Dog". It is very helpful even for just the basics.

I also recommend taking him out to the fields and start shooting the gun over his head. Get him used to the gun fire. Also- it will keep you from wasting your time training if he can't get over the gun fire.

You might also be suprised how much is natural to him, too.

Labs "retrieve" NOT "hunt". There are *millions* of people who are into bird dogs or retrievers. Check your local sportsmans clubs,DNR,AKC site for info.
