Some pet shops have really good deals esp if you shop out of season ( so long as your dog is not going to grow). Try ebay and monsoon have a pets section, try online.
You can buy whatever you want for your dog it is your dog and your money. There are plenty of ways people spend money that others might not agree with (drink, cigarettes, drugs, computer games, gym membership....) but it is up to the individual.
My dog has a wee red coat for winter as she has short hair and gets cold, but she also has a pink and lilac poncho (because it looks so cute on her and I had one when it was in) a santa suit (for xmas cards) and a wee t-shirt that says sunshine pup (which I used for making my own postcards).
So long as the dog does not mind then why not? My dog loves all the fuss and attention.
Each to their own and happy shopping!

I ususally buy it on eBay because you can choose many styles and the prices are pretty good. I also go to other online pet stores as they will have sales and you can save some money. Such as www.fortunepet.com and i got a $5 off $25 coupon from my friend. I also looked at petedge before but you have to order over a certain amount to void the extra fee.
