It all depends on your lifestyle. We picked a Pembroke Welsh Corgi because it's the right size and right temperament. He's very smart and he's pottytrained - not quite there yet but I think we're making good progress with him.
If you have kids or planning to have a family but don't want a big dog, then I think this is the perfect breed for you. They have the same temperament as big dogs but just the right size (around 10-12 inches and 30 pounds). But if you want something cute and portable then toy dogs are for you.

I believe it depends on where you are located. City or Country? Apartment or House? I believe that the best indoor dogs teen to be yorkie, Shih Tzu's or Chihuhua's... They are small but hearty dogs with alot of personality. For outside dogs, I would recomend Akita's They are large, highly protective, love children and do not bark UNLESS a stranger enter's their domain.
I own Chihuahua's, Shih Tzu, Akita & Rat Terrier's

I think the "best dog" is the dog that best mirrors his/her owner's personality, habits, behavior, and cadence. My family and I love our doggie. Her name is piper and she is a golden retriever. In fact I think Piper, as an addition to the family( we all think of her as our little sister), has helped bring the family closer through her goofy, friendly, playful, active, healthy, and personalable nature. Not all doggies are the same but most breeds tend to share same characteristics( I.E. American Cocker Spaniels have an unusually large amount of medical issues dealing with their ears, sight, or hips).
Personally I think the golden retriever is the most personable, most kind, very intelligent and very obdient dog breed there is.

The kind of dog has little to do with personality to be the 'best' for you. Just like people - looks/breeding to not predict character. Pick one that picks you!

I think Schauzers are great. They are very obedient, and faithfull, like most dogs. They are very well manored. They also look nice when well trimed.
They have 3 sized: Giant, Medium/Normal, and Miniature.
Miniature's are not so small, they have a great size, and so do medium sized Schnauzers.
