If the disciples plotted this whole "myth", what exactly did they have to "gain"??

Very good question. Why in the world would they want to plot a whole myth in which they woyuld be martyred and reviled?
If Christianity were a myth, the disciples were either crazy or very decieved. I like your question a lot. Good point.

They are part of the myth. They are no more real than Jesus.
