This is a number supposedly issued to individuals who for whatever reason are not eligible for or do not want citizenship. This number has been given as "proof" that illegal immigrants are being "bilked" out of benefits. Anyone have the "LEGAL" parameters of this number?

Sorry, I seem to have had the contraction wrong: seems to be ItIn--Thanks for the correct listing. So, if the IRS/Soc. Sec. departments issue these numbers to illegals, why is "finding them" and enforcing our laws such an "impossible" situation which our government seems to be saying?

IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number from the Social Security Administration. You need this form if you recieved a W-7. (meaning they are here legally)

Foreign buyers and sellers of U.S. real property interests need Taxpayer Identification Numbers to request reduced tax withholding when disposing of the property interest, and to pay any required withholding. Individuals who do not qualify for Social Security Numbers may obtain Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers to meet the requirement to supply a TIN. Meaning it can be a corporation or a indivudual.

Majority of people who use INLT are professionals who work in US corporations. Meaning that these individuals were braught to the US through recuiting to fill in job postitions needed. Not "illegals" since they do not want to risk exposure.

Social Security Department does not issue these numbers at all. They are issued by the IRS.

The ITIN is for tax purposes only. It does not entitle the individual to social security benefits (MEANING THEY DO NOT RECIEVE ANY MONEY FORM SOCIAL SECURITY SINCE THEY HAVE NO CLAIM TO IT), and creates no inference regarding the individuals immigration status or right to work in the U.S.

The most common examples of individuals who may need ITINs are B-1, WB and J-1 visa holders (e.g., visiting professors and short-term scholars) who are in the country for extremely short periods of time and who receive non-employee compensation such as honorarium, lecture fees, performance fees or royalties. Meaning that Visitors on a J-1 visa are required to provide a "rejection letter" from the Social Security Administration office.

What you do is you take the form W-7 and supporting documents (I-20, passport and I-94) to the IRS or a tax professional and provide the completed Form W-7 along with certified or notarized copies of I-20, passport and visa pages and I-94. Form W-7 and the certified or notarized copies of documents must now be attached to your federal tax return. After your Form W-7 has been processed, the IRS will assign an ITIN to the tax return and process the tax return. MEANING IF YOU ARE ILLEGAL YOU CAN NOT FILE A INTL.

I must add a person living ILLEGALLY CAN NEVER FILE FOR SOCIAL SECURITY since because of their ILLEGAL STATUS if they file for SOCIAL SECURITY any of its benefits this means getting caught. They only use the FAKE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS for the(SOMETIMES PROVIDED BY THE EMPLOYER THEMSELVES) they will never file a TAX RETURN.

Social Security Administration remains solvent in large part due to deductions taken from the paychecks of illegal immigrant workers, yet Social Security will never pay benefits to those workers. The workers pay in, but they never receive back. Meaning a illegal can nevera have claim to any sort of tax benefits.

So the Social Security Administration just keeps the money put in by illegal employees since they will never never never file a claim to it. Also this money that the Social Security Administration keeps is never given to people who really need it..sadly enough.

I might also add a person who files a INLT doesn't not mean they do not want residency

People who file tax returns are with US citizens or US Residents or Businesses since they are a taxed also.

ITIN is issued by IRS and one of its uses is to allow a non-resident, non-citizen to file tax returns and claim refund of at-source deduction

What in the world are you talking about? Do you mean the "A" numbers that are given to US legal permanent resident aliens, and go on their green cards?
