It all irrelevant to today's debate anyway. If anyone one has a claim to this country its native Americans. The Spanish failed to capitalize on early exploration and were simply pushed aside by larger and wealthier European armies. Today America belongs to its citizens and not illegal immigrants of any flavor.

Let Me Try To Explain Something To You
And To Anyone That THINKS Mexico Has ANY Claim To The USA
Its NOT The Land That These Infiltraters Are After
These Invaders Are Intent On Exploiting
The INFRASTRUCTURE Of This Nation
They Want The HEALTH, EDUCATION, And WELFARE Benefits That Have Been Built Up By TAXPAYING CITIZENS Of This Nation
WE THE PEOPLE Built This Nation
These ILLEGAL Aliens Live And Work Here
And Send MUCHO DINERO South Of The Border
(To The Tune Of Some 39 Billion US Dollars Annually)
The Entire Time Living FREE Of Paying Federal Taxes
That Are Used To Maintain The INFRASTRUCTURE
That They Are Exploiting
(Schools, Hospitals, Roads, ETC.)
They Might As Well Be Loading Up Our GOLD BUILLION
Out Of Fort Knox Onto Trucks
And Delivering It To Mexico City
Now THINK For A Minute
100 US Dollars Doesnt Sound Like Much HERE
But In MEXICO
The Same 100 US Dollars Goes A Long Way
(Thats RELATIVITY - See EINSTEIN)
MANY Of These ILLEGAL Infiltrators
Will Send This Money Back For Several Years (5 Or 6)
To Build A Substantial Nest Egg In Mexico
And Go Home To Live In A Nice Home And Eat Well
Only To Turn Around And Send The Next Generation, (Son)
Or Perhaps A Brother
To Maintain This Lifestyle In Mexico
And Now That We Are Becoming Wise To This SCAM On The American Taxpayer
They Are Reaching Into History Searching For EXCUSES And REASONS To Justify This RIPOFF Of The American Taxpayer
"I Was Here First, You STOLE OUR LAND"
'CIVIL RIGHTS"
Etc.
These People Would Not WANT To Be On This Land
If It Wasnt DEVELOPED Into A FIRST WORLD NATION
Which Is A Development Created By
AMERICAN CITIZENS And LEGAL IMMIGRANTS
NOT 20 Million ILLEGAL Aliens
Excuses, Excuses

I have known for some time that the history I was taught in school was not correct or entirely truthful. I have always been upset about the way the native americans were treated, and not just because I am part native american. All I've ever tried to defend is what we have now. Things are not like they were back then, with so much land and resources to go around for all who would come. Is there any country on this planet with natives who have been there since the beginning of time? Is there any country that doesn't write its own history in its favor? Why is it only the US is supposed to be ashamed of its past to never be forgiven? Why does no one respect our laws? We can't go back and change the past. We are all a mixture of the people in our past. We cannot accept the population of the entire world into this country no matter how much everybody whines that it is unfair for us to refuse. I think I finally realize something: There is nothing we can ever do to please the world except to destroy ourselves. But would that even be enough?

I disagree with some of the issues. First I am Indian, and before the Spanish, French, English, or any other nation invaded we were a multilingual country. Many tribes spoke different languages, but most had a common language to help aid each other in survival, and the hunt for food. The early settlers faced the same hardships that my people faced, and yet they have endured. This endurance as Indians came to understand came from the ability to communicate with each other with a common language. The choice was made for us, but was accepted, and through that acceptence America began to grow. Because her laws protected the people, and the land, and resources where great America welcomed others who wanted also to flee the cruel leadership of their homelands. The country grew and flourished on the sweet blood, and sweat of the American people from all country's. The battles that were fought and won here were more about the rights to live free from over burdening governments, and racism, driven fear of laws that allow our government to spy on us by invading our homes, and our private moments. We once had the right to not be iimprisoned for being too poor to pay fines, or taxes. Those laws have long since been gone, and buried. Once the economy collapsed because of over population, and abuse by industry, Americans became well aware of the hardships that are brought upon us by having our laws defied. That is why the stance with the American people has once again become stern, and determined to correct the errors our government believes it has a right to make against us. The next presidental election will really be a show, because no one wants another president like what we have seen for the last thirty to forty years. We want a president for the people, and OF THE PEOPLE.
Not another industry man, who is only out for his own gain, and not the wealth of the American people. The reason Americans had the money to be the largest contributers of donations to needy countries was not because of the taxes they pay. Those taxes are paid regardless of the donations, it is because Americans cherish and understand the wealth allowed them through the freedoms given to them by our laws. We are a compassionate people, and now that we are asking for the criminals in our nation to do something for out country they refuse. Presidents like Mr. Bush are finished in America, and Americans are looking hard for the next one, and saying "No!" to what they see saying that they would like to run.
Our Declaration of Independence declares The Party System as an Evil, and I think Americans now know why, and it will be a big factor in the next president chosen..

But what does that have to do with illegal immigration? We know that there were Spaniards here .. we know that there were Vikings here ... we know the history ... and what does that prove? We have to deal with the reality of TODAY, which is that the majority is English speaking ... English is the "unofficial" official language ... what are you trying to prove? History is just that ... history ... borders change through the centuries, new countries are formed, wars are fought and lost .... by the same token, Danish should be spoken in Sweden, because Sweden once belonged to Denmark ... Finland should be all speaking Swedish, because Finland once belonged to Sweden ... the Poles should be speaking nothing, because their country was always divided between Germany and Russia and God knows who ... the European history is full countries and peoples who once were, but are no more .... the United States of today is an entity with its own laws and its own people, no matter who came here first and did what ...

It proves nothing but to muddy the water. For that to have a point, it would have to be that we demanded Mexico to stop speaking spanish and speak English, and that is ludicrous.
If you want the best way to describe this issue, I suggest President Roosevelt in 1907:
"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here.
Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag,
and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

I think its important to understand everyone's role in the building of our nation, including the Spanish, and realize that history is usually skewed in favor of the winner. I also think its important to realize that manifest destiny hurt a lot of people, mostly minorities, and that expansion has its casualties.
PS nice article, thanks for bringing it up

Sorry ale-the NY times is a bias newspaper-I don't accept how they slant things-often. And they have been caught in downright lies at times.
Much is missing-to know history one must read many books to find out what is true. Please if you want to be informed continue your reading-this paper is trash.
History is history. Today is today.
