Professional cleaners are the best route to go. Cat urine sinks down to the underlay and you need a huge machine to get to it. Having your carpet cleaned is probably less expensive then you think, phone for an estimate.

There is a pet odor remover made by Rug Doctor. You can get it at Walmart (I think) or any place that you can rent the rug dr machine from. You run it through a carpet cleaner and it works. There is also a spray on carpet cleaner called Capture. You can get that I know for sure at Lowes, but probably anywhere else with the cleaning supplies. This works well too. You may have to treat it more than once if it's imbedded into the pad and stuff. To see where all of the spots are, use a black light. Cat urine illuminates under them.

To be honest, there really isn't anything that can totally get the smell out like you want it to. But some stuff to try: 1) Clean area AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!! You can try using a mixture of hot water & white viniger. For every 1 part viniger use3-4 parts water. This will help w/ the cat pee smell as well as aid in repelling your cat from peeing there again. Most cats will try to re-mark a spot that has been cleaned, b-cause the smell of their pee is not as pungent, But using the viniger will keep your cat away, they hate the smell that much. I do warn you that you too will be able to smell the viniger, not too much though, but it will stay in the air for a few hours. 2) The best way to stop a kitty who pees outside the box is eo MAKE SURE IT REALLY CLEAN ALL THE TIME. Cats by nature are very clean animals, & a dirty litter box just won't do, but your carpet sure will if it has too. Hope this has helped

Try Zero Odor - I've found it works extremely well on all kinds of cat and dog "accidents". On a rug, you have to get through the carpet and down to the pad, or you won't eliminate the odor. Also, remember that like any liquid, urine doesn't just sit in one spot - it wicks outward, away from the original site of contamination. No matter what product you use, you'll need to cover an area that is a lot bigger than the original spot.

For old, dry pet urine, locate the source of the urine odor using a black light:
Cleaning old, dry cat urine is no more difficult to clean than fresh “accidents.”
Use a commercial bacterial cleaner to eliminate cat urine odor.
Saturate the area with the bacterial enzyme cleaner and let dry naturally for several days.
Once the carpet is dry to the touch, about 3-5 days, check for odors.
If the cat urine odors are still noticeable, repeat the above instructions until the cat urine odor is no longer present.

Don't use the steam cleaner as someone suggested. at first it looks good but then a week or two later, any stains lying in the padding below will resuface with a vengence. Vet sells "special" carpet cleaners to get smells out - or try Resolve in the aerosal can.
Also, find out why the cat is peeing on the carpet! They don't usually do that. Is the litter box dirty? Is he/she ill? If male, have they been fixed - that smell never comes out...

I liked the stuff I got at Walmart in the pet section. It was called Spray Out! or something like that. I can't remember the name of it but I think it was the only thing in the pet section of my Walmart. It worked really well.
