try experimenting with different litters and foods. try putting bakind soda in the litter, and when u clean out the littler box....(which should be everyday), soak it in hot water in like mr. clean or something. i always use a lysol wipe thing to clean the outside of the litter box and around it. oust air sanitizer has worked OK for me, but i just keep a glade plug in thingy next to the litterbox and i put it on the highest setting. i hope you find something that works!

Get rid of the cat... :)

Seriously though, there were already some good suggestions, including changing the litter box itself; I have 3 cats, and I usually get rid of the old box and buy a new one about every 3 or 4 months.

And if you have a Sam's Club nearby, they sell a product called "Odo-Ban" that works really well. Just spray it into the pan everytime you change the litter, and it will really help. (If the jug doesn't come with a spray bottle, just mix the Odo-Ban 50/50 with water in your own spray bottle).

In the end, though, it is almost impossible to get rid of the smell entirely; visitors will almost be able to walk in and go "*sniff*... you have a cat, don't you???", no matter hard you work at keeping the litterbox fresh... I guess it's just the price we pay for the "honor" of taking care of the little furballs... :)

Try a litter box with a lid and a fliter in the lid or at least one with higher sides... believe it or not, it does make a difference. Set the pan on a rug that can be taken out and washed. Like men, cat's sometimes "miss"

Get litter with baking soda in it, or mix some in with the litter. It really helps.

Use a deodorizer that specifies "pet odors" on the label. Febreeze the carpet around the pan, or better yet, rent a steam cleaner to remove the smell from carpets and fabrics in the room.

Talk to your vet. Sometimes odor can be caused by something that the cat is getting too much, or not enough, of in their diet. (just like happens when someone eats too much garlic and their body odor changes)

Use woodchips or newspaper litter - there really is no other way to get rid of the odor. Scoopable litter may work, but remember all of that dust will get into yours and your cat's lungs and make you both sick. You may want to take the litterbox out of the room and see if the smell is still lingers there. If it does then it might not be the box - make sure your cat isn't using the floor somewhere.

I've always had at least 3 cats at any given time. Here are some things I've noticed that help.

Get a litter box with a ventilated lid on it.

Use scoopable litter for multiple cats, even if you only have one cat.

Try baking soda or activated charcoal sprinkled in the litter.

Make sure the pile the cat leaves behind is covered in litter.

Make sure that there is no excrement on the sides of the box, if so, scoop some litter on to it.

Scoop often.

Change the box of litter when it starts to have residual odor.

Or you could teach your cats to go in the human toilet.

Even if you scoop regularly the litter will eventually start to smell all on its own. Residue of waste, primarily urine, provides nutrients for bacteria which then produce smelly byproducts. Stirring in some baking soda will reduce the odor but not eliminate it.

Eventually you have to dump out all the litter, wash out the box and refill it with fresh litter. Most sources say this needs to be done once a week, but in practice the frequency may vary.

When you clean the litter box out entirely, wash it, and soak it for about 15 minutes in a safe cleaner, or just soap and water. Then put in a litter than covers odors. And you should probably clean it more than once or twice a week if it smells so just empty it every night.

Clean the litter frequently, buy a odor absorbing spray *available at any pet market*, try changing the brand of litter or train the cat to use the bowl like Mr Jinx :)

First, clean it completely out. Throw the used material out. Clean the box. Use an odor absorbant material to refill it. Clean it daily. REMOVE the waste to an outside container. Change litter monthly, as remnants remain in the litter even after cleaning. Hope this helps....I've had my cat ( Dude ) for 17 years, and he never complianed!
