The Yaris has been out in Europe for quite a few years. It is NOT a brand new, first-year model. From what I've heard, the Corolla only gets about 35 MPG, but the Yaris gets 40 MPG and many owners have said they've been getting even more than that. I am personally also torn between the two. I have an old Corolla now and it's been great (175,000 miles on it and it's only recently started having problems), but from what I've heard about the new models, they've gone downhill. I think I'm leaning towards the Yaris.

We test drove both a while back...seemed to me the Corolla won out by a landslide.
The Yaris, first off, was not a pretty car. That, however, is subjective. But what I noticed is that even though I'm "just" 5'7", I bumped my head pretty hard when I was getting in the back seat - and I thought I was ducking too much. In other words, anybody you put in the back seat better be an in-law, or someone you're very close friends with.
Powerwise, it's far from fast, but seemed pretty adequate. The a/c blew nice and cold. The automatic transmission shifted pretty nicely, and it rode very nicely for something with such a short wheelbase. The interior was laid out nicely with one big exception - the gauges were in the middle rather than in front of the driver. Some people don't mind this; I don't like it at all.
Now, the Corolla was bigger, sacrificed very little in the gas mileage, to my eyes looks far, far better and had the gauges in front of the driver! The Corolla also seemed to ride a touch more smoothly, and generally did everything the Yaris did, but did it better. I'd spend the extra $1500 and get the Corolla, without any doubt whatsoever.

I have a new Yaris and I like it. I'm a big guy and it seems to handle me well. I wish I could mount the seat back 6 inches, but thats not happening.
The Yaris automatic gets 2 more MPG on the expressway and 4 more in the city. The corrola is a good buy as well, but I wanted to save the money and get the MPG. I have the stick version of the Yaris and I get 40 on the highway for the most part.

definitely the toyota corolla. they have a much longer and better track record than the yaris. more of the kinks have been worked out, beings that it is an older model. The yaris still has some things they need to improve upon. So, i would purchase the corolla

Yaris is the new entry-level Toyota model and a step below the Corolla. The Yaris should be cheaper. However, it's a brand-new model and you probably shouldn't buy a new model, since the defects havn't been worked out yet.

I would also recommend the Corolla as thebigm57 says; first year models can have a lot of problems. As to bentworth78’s comments, America is a capitalist society, which means the distribution of goods are determined in a free market. If a company wants to sell more units they have to provide a better value. When I make a purchase, I look for the best value I can get, not at who made it.

Yaris more sporty, Corolla more practacial
if I was going back and forth to work I would buy the corolla, better MPG and more room inside, and the ride is a lot more easy going, and it is bigger
I drive a lot

I have a Corolla and I can tell you that it gets about 34 miles per gallon but I am not so sure about the Yaris.

The Yuris S model has cool features and it is better looking than Corolla! And gives you better milage too 35-40 MPG!! So I 'll go with YARIS at 15000 fully loaded!
