I want a dog that doesn't shed a lot. I was thinking a miniture collie, Id even deal w/ the fur. Or even a pug. What small breeds are known as good companions?

Thank you all for your helpful advice. I enjoyed reading about why every one loves their dog. After checking out many websites (dogster is sooo cute), I have decided to check out a yorki/pomaranian mix. They look like fluffy gizmo dogs. Well there is know way I can choose a best answer so I'll leave that up to you.

I'm biased of course, but I would suggest a Cocker Spaniel. I adopted mine about four years ago and she is the most wonderful, loving, and loyal dog I've ever known. As for the shedding, Cockers do grow really long hair, but it's easily solved with a trip to the doggy salon (that's where my girl is right now!) and they don't shed an awful lot on a day-to-day basis.

I can't say enough about how sweet my dog is. I really, highly recommend Cocker Spaniels for anyone looking for a great little companion.

I'm surprised no one has said miniature or toy poodles. A toy can weigh from 4-8 pounds, a miniature usually up to about 25. It goes by height at the shoulder if they are toy or poodle. they and standard poodles are all the same kind of dog: just in different sizes. Poodles are often used as service dogs for people with disabilities or health problems because they are so trainable. They are non shedding, very intelligent and trainable, happy, long lived little dogs. Real companions and very loving, with a sense of humor. Need little exercise, but are hardy and eager to go hikes, walks and car rides. No doggy odor as a rule, and you don't really have to have them "poodle groomed." They are adorable as natural curly little dogs.. Great watch dogs, but can yap a lot. Food costs low, as they don;t eat much. "Little dogs, little poops."

Try looking into a Maltese. They are hypo-allergenic, because they have hair, not fur. This also means they do not shed. I had one and they are know as the puppy that stays a puppy. They are very active, likes to walk and play alot. Their coat is something else to take care of, they do need to be groomed. And also they have a tendancy to go deaf because of ear infections, but if you take care of that it shouldn't be an issue. I would go to a web site that lists all the breeds and look into what you think would work good for your lifestyle.

for small breeds, i always have gone with my west higland white terriers, but they can run in the price range of $500-$1500, depending if you are interested in showing or not. they are sweet dogs and great companions. they hardly ever bark, and are lap dogs.they get up to about 12 lbs. we have also always breed Pekingese. They first originated in China and are they cutest little dogs. they are sweet and neither of these breeds hardly ever shed. i just take them to the groomers once every month or every other month, depending on the new hair growth. i hope this helps you some, have a good day!!! :)

A great, faithful, good with children, does not shed much hair, easy to look after is, wait for it, a short haired Jack Russell. Highly recommended. Equally good, but does shed hair and sometimes nervous, a West Highland Terrier, (white). Beautiful and intelligent. I would be slightly in favour of the Jack Russell...

depends if you want a loud dog or not. If you don't care if they bark alot, there are tons of different kinds, but if not, that's something you need to take into consideration. Go to a local pet store, and if you're looking into a collie or a pug, see if they have any, don't buy, unless you want to, play with them in the store for a little bit. You can tell if you want one pretty easliy that way.

I am totally in love with my Lhasa Apso. He is my second Lhasa. My first was a female and she lived to be 14 years old! My male is almost 3 and what a comic!! Lhasas make great companions! They do not shed, are not barkers, don't need a lot of exercise, LOVE attention, are very smart. Check them out!

I think it is important to look at your living circumstances. Are you looking for a dog that has lots of energy, for instance? I like pugs. They seem to be adorable little dogs, and a bit more cuddly and peaceful. Miniature dachshunds are also cute as can be. All need good socialisation and training though.

Myself, I have a laborador... :)

I cant believe people are telling you to get a jack russell. they are good for people who have a lot of time and energy, and who like to play tug of war. They do shed, especially during the spring time. My jack russell can shake in the spring time and all you see is a cloud of white fur! And yes, she is short haired! get a mini bull terrier( the Target dog!)
