I would guess some basic questions come to mind(I am Owner of a Travel Agency):
1-Are you looking for a Air/Hotel package? Hotel alone?
2-How many travelling?
3-Your Travel Budget?
4-Dates of checkin/checkout?
5-Since you're going to LA, are you looking to do sightseeing?
Minor considerations for certain but important in this respect--it will make finding the Hotel you want to stay at much easier to do. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your wish list, we can peruse what is available, and hopefully I can help you make an informed decision.

The best hotel in the Downtown Los Angeles area is the HILTON CHECKERS! It is centrally located and publice transportation will take you to most tourist spots!

I would recommend staying in Orange County, a little south of LA. It is close to Disneyland and those places and a nice area. Many of the hotels are less expensive too.
