Not withstanding the usual arguments of waste disposal, nuclear is very efficient and if we want to break our dependency on oil is the best way forward until such time as we can make better use of solar, wind and water renewables.

That said my main bug bear lies is the fact that there exist reactor designs that are safer than the current models and will stop the reaction from running out of control. Unfortunately they are slightly more expensive, require skilled operators and cannot be used to enrich plutonium.

Says it all I think :¬/

Yes we need Nuclear power in the UK its the only way to go to keep up with demand.
In the 1930s the majority of UK homes were fitted with two power sockets one upstairs and one usually in the dinning room of your home, if you wanted more you had to have them fitted yourself or use extention leads.
now we have six or more sockets in each room.
we now need power for a tv, a washing machine, a utility room, keyboards, videos, dvdplayers, and the list goes on and on and on oops I forgot the lowly pc and all its power requirements.
Most of this is all running on old 1930s infrastructure ie the same old supply cables in the streets.
If you really think about it the most productive way to keep up with this constant demand for power is to go nuclear because nothing else has proved sustainable enough to meet demand.
the only thing that needs upgrading then is the cable carrying the electricity burried in the road.

I don't think it's rushed, there's been allot of research in the past decades, but if we do go in that direction it's still important to further research and develop the renewable energy programs for the long, long future

There are no realistic alternatives. We would have to cover the country in wind farms to provide enough energy.
