The vets and trainer we worked with haven't offered much help, just telling our family to try to be very quiet and low-key around her. They have said it is a personality characteristic in her, and no medical or other treatments were recommended. She is 7 years old, is spayed since before age 1, yet has ALWAYS "tinkled", aside from relieving herself in the yard. She is submissive, especially around me (I'm the Alpha Female, I guess), and will leave a spot of urine when she sits or lays. She will also urinate, seemingly purposefully by squatting, when excited (for example, we can't get the leash out in the house, and have to be ready to mop up when friends she knows and likes come to visit). I cannot keep up with cleaning nor possibly locate all of the urine from carpets, floors, blankets, her kennel, and wherever else she rests. HELP!!

PLEASE don't misunderstand my meaning, we would never, ever, ever give her up. She is a much-loved member of our family since she was a puppy. I am just tuckered out (Mom gets to do it all, by default :-( !) from cleaning all the upholstery, washing blankets, pillows, and carpets DAILY, and the house still smells like pee! I am so sorry, I never meant to imply we would let her go in any way, but thank you for your concern about that!

Submissive urination...there is an article on it in the link. It can be a really difficult problem to deal with - but it sound behavioral. I would look for a behaviorist (not a trainer - two different things). An applied animal behaviorist is also a DVM...they can prescribe drugs if needed, and are skilled in behavior modification. There are also animal behavior consultants - not a veterinarian. Check out the article, then look for a behaviorist.

Yes, this is submissive urination. One of our male dogs has been known to be an offender, though he eventually did grow out of it after a couple of years. There isn't anything you can do about it other than try to build your dog's confidence level up. Use only positive training methods, never punish.

There are two practical ways you can deal with the pee. They actually make, basically, diapers for dogs. Dogs do get incontinent in their old age, so there are products out there to keep your dog from peeing on the floor. She may look kind of silly, but it'll save your carpets. Also, you can go get a blacklight (they sell them at PetCo) to find all the pee spots you weren't able to clean up. It's just like CSI, though I warn you, I've been told by people who've done this that seeing what is actually in your rugs can be pretty scary! But, once located you can use an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Bio-Kleen BacOut to clean the old pee spots.

For the leaking when sleeping they give
phenopropalamine (speling?) They also use estrogen for it
However if the problem is the submissive peeing there is not anything you can do about it.
You can not train this out of the dog. It is a submissve gesture and one they either grow out of or not. At 7 she is not going to grow out of this.
I would not make a big deal out of it an d just clean it up as needed.
The dog would have to be confined to an area where I could clean up and not be on carpet or furniture.
This would be a very very frustraing problem.
Good luck.

If you mean submissive urination then it would help to build up her self esteem. Take her to an agility class, that will do wonders for her self esteem.

If it is passive there are meds that can help. It may very well be spay incontinence.

I would say that if you can't keep up with her, give her to some one who can, dont put her down, but find someone who will be honored to clean up after her, i am not saying you dont love her but she needs someone who will be patient with her, gentle with her, kind to her. I, being a vet trainee, would take her in gladly, i would even pay for her. but if you want to keep her, you might want to restrict her to a certain area of the house. that way you will alway know the general location of her urinations.

Good Luck!!!
