Phantom of the Opera. I like it because I took my wife to NY city to see it on her birthday. It was two months after we got married. So, it was the first time we celebrated her birthday as a married couple. By the way, I took her to the Rainbow Room for dinner prior to the performance.

It's a sad day when people think that the Phantom of the Opera is an opera. Sad indeed.

My favorites are Mozart's Magic Flute or The Marriage of Figaro.

The Phantom of the Opera isn't an opera, it's a musical. Opera's are fully sung, and if it's on Broadway, it's most likely not an opera.

My favorite has always been 'Carmen' though, and have always cherished 'The Magic Flute', I grew up with it and love it.

I don't have my opera notes with me, and it's been a while. I think all of the operas mentioned have amazing parts. "Lohengrin" is very moving. I think "The Magic Flute" is probably the easiest to watch. I think "Phantom of the Opera" might walk a fine line between musical and opera. Maybe it's a "mopera" or an "oprical"? lol

You might think this weird but I ONLY listen to opera and never go to see it! So from a purely musical point if view it would be a toss up between The Thieving Magpie by Rossini and The Valkyrie by Wagner.

Of course Mozart is best over all!

Without a doubt The Phantom of the Opera! Only with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman though.

I love opera . Aida ( Verdi) was the first one I saw many yrs ago. It is stunning both musically and visually.
But i also like contemporary opera. Two of the best, in my opinion:
The death of Klinghoffen
Dead man walking( after the book of Sister Helen Prejean)
(yes, there is also a movie with Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn)

I Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. Drama, action, great characters, terrific score.

And Phantom of the Opera is NOT -- let me repeat that, NOT -- an opera! Its a musical -- and not a very good one, either.

Personally i'm a fan of Dead Man Walking by Jake Heggie, however, Cosi and Le Nozze are hard to top as is Boheme. And who can forget Falstaff by Verdi? Modern day easy to watch I would have to go with Dead Man. Highly entertaining and Flicka (Frederica Von Stade) is incredible!
