As per my question "putting them in the trash properly" does mean in a proper receptacle where nothing will catch fire. I guess a secondary question would be why do you feel you have the right throw litter down? How about I get rid of all of the trash cans in my house so I won't have a proper receptacle and throw it in your yard? Is that alright?

Well, since most trash containers contain paper, it would be a quick way to start a fire. Even if you try to make sure it is out, in the process you scatter a lot of sparks.
But I agree with you - smokers cause a lot of trash. In some of the companies I have worked for, they put a can with sand outside near the door and encouraged people to distinguish their cigarettes into that. This helped the cigarette trash problem - at least around that door!
The worst is at the beach, where hundreds of butts mar the sands, pollute the water, kill marine life, injure birds, etc.
I don't know what else to suggest, other than smokers to be more considerate - should towns/cities or stores have sand cans for proper disposal? Do any other answerers have other suggestions?

Because one should NEVER put butts in the trash! If there is a proper receptical for butts, I'll use it. If not, then I'm going to crush it out on the ground to make sure that it cannot start a fire.

I smash mine on the ground under my foot then put them in the trash. Or I'll use an ashtray if one's available.

Putting your trash on the ground has nothing to do with smoking, some people are just pigs, doesn't matter if they smoke or not.

Because smoking is a disgusting habit and the people who do it are likewise disgusting and without class.
I don't smoke, but I agree with your right to do it. Just put the butts in the can, man.

well they r lazy n some ppl dun do it properly n once i saw e bin caught (small)fire!n it stinks.
