Well, you could constantly rinse the child's hands in ammonia. They'll hate the taste ;).

I'M KIDDING!!!

Sorry, bad joke.

Seriously, though. Try this website. I've found it to be helpful regarding this issue.

if he is biting his fingers hard enough to break the skin, this could cause an infection.A simple and easy cure...mix a dash of cayenne pepper with water and rub some on his fingers.it will only take a couple of times of putting his fingers in his mouth to break the habit! And it won't harm him and it's a better solution that relying on some sort of drug to do it!It's great for kids that suck their thumbs too! Or puppies that chew things

Really you cannot. Is it due to stress? Does he do it for comfort or because molars are coming in? You can distract him, reward him when he stops but getting on him about it will just get him to do it more. There are many reasons kids pick up bad habits, my son is getting in molars and has his fingers in his mouth all the time, my five year old bites on her fingernails when she is tired. Just try to refocus their attention....breaking the habit.

My 2 year old does the same thing, he even pinches himself hard enough to leave marks sometimes. My pediatrician said that it's not anything to worry about unless they are doing actual harm to themselves. Since he's just biting his fingers you could always try gloves.

Probably isn't a sensory-motor issue, but keep this idea in mind in case no other solutions work. Make sure his fingers function well when doing other things. Can he pick up a button and put it on a dot on paper? Can he scribble with crayons?

I would first make sure he doesn't have a skin condition like eczema which mainly affects your hands or your feet. It itches like crazy and sometimes biting it could be soothing, but, it's easily resolved with a prescribed cream from your doc. My 3 year old started biting his hands and arms when we first got our puppy who was quite nippy, maybe your guy is emulating something he sees someone or something else doing.

Well, I know my brother would intentionally hurt himself as a baby and it turned out he had a bladder infection. The DR said sometimes a baby will cause "other pain" to cover up a current pain. Not saying that is what is going on with your son, but maybe watch his other behaviors to see if you can pick something else up.

My little girl did the same thing. I was really worried about her touching things in public places then getting germs. Her Dr said it was ok but told me to get this special clear nail polish that tastes really bad. I got it and it worked. Its in any drug store. I
