it cant be 1865 man, they used them during the indian wars, which was after the end of the US Civil War. I am wondering, because I have a Virginia brass button with a JH Wilson Phila backmarking, and apparently they were not in business long, but were makers for Indian War buttons. The piece seems to be extremely rare, but the company was in business until 1900.

These were discontinued by the US military during the period just prior to World War I, as a move to better show a unification of troops from all over the country, instead of identification of units from different states. The practice of showing individual state recognition continued until WW 2 as shoulder patches used by various units of Reserves and later National Guard units.
