My hearing impaired patients seem to really like TV Ears (check out http://www.tvears.com/). You can put the television volume wherever you like or even way down if others are sleeping in your home, and you can adjust the volume on your receiver as much as you want. You plug the transmitter into the audio output of your television so it does not interfere with the volume of your television. Good luck!

Are you using the headphone jack or the RCA audio-out (red and white) jacks? The TV may not shut off its speakers when the RCA jacks are used. You can take the signal from the RCA jacks and send that through a separate amplifier for the headphones. PC computer speakers have this amplifier built in, so you can send the TV's RCA signal into a set of PC speakers that have a headphone jack, and just use headphones with them.

If the TV shuts the speakers off when you use the RCA jacks, you will need to put Y connectors on the RCA jacks, and send the TV signal to two sets of PC speakers. Your spouse will listen to one set of speakers, while you listen on the other using headphones.
